Putting British and Urban Filmmakers FIRST

Redefining Independent Film Distribution

For over seventy years, the global film industry has operated under a distribution model that often disadvantages independent filmmakers. Traditionally, distributors cover the cost of marketing and advertising (P&A), recoup every penny before producers see any return, and then apply a maze of opaque revenue splits and “creative accounting.” The result? Many independent films never generate meaningful profit for their creators, even when audiences show up.

BUFF Studios is here to change that.

Emerging from the twenty-year legacy of the British Urban Film Festival, BUFF Studios is built on independence, transparency, and fairness. Our mission is simple: to give independent filmmakers control, clarity, and a genuine share of their success.

The BUFF distribution model flips the old approach on its head. P&A costs are no longer an open-ended debt to filmmakers. Instead, they are capped at a fixed, upfront amount – never more than £20,000 – and not recouped before profit splits begin. This gives producers immediate visibility into their financial position from day one of release.

BUFF then negotiates directly with cinemas. Each venue agrees a percentage split of gross box office, typically 50/50 or 60/40. We aggregate those into one clear Exhibitor Share, and from there, apply the BUFF split. Producers know in advance what the exhibitor takes, what BUFF takes, and what they take home. No hidden deductions. No surprises.

We also offer optional packaging services for filmmakers at the development stage. For a fixed fee, BUFF provides box office projections, marketing insights, and release strategy plans. This empowers independent filmmakers to pitch their projects with the same financial confidence as major studios.

Our approach has already been tested. In 2025, BUFF Studios launched Ireke: Rise of the Maroons (Nigeria) at Marche Du Cannes which helped secure a 17 site, 100+ screening release across multiple UK sites, with screenings reported and verified by Comscore. Our client (Afristar Studios) received a transparent, detailed breakdown of the revenue, ensuring complete clarity and confidence in the process.

BUFF Studios isn’t just about releasing films – it’s about rewriting the rules. By replacing seven decades of outdated practice with a model built on fairness, clarity, and respect, we are building a future where independent filmmakers don’t just survive in cinemas, but thrive.

Independent films. Transparent distribution. Real results.
